Android L (Android 5.0), the latest version of Android will get a new redesigned keyboard with a new look. The new look is very simply yet, it is very cool looking.

The new Google Keyboard from Android L is very easy to install and you can get it right now by installing it like a regular app.

Follow the instructions below to install the Google Keyboard from Android L and activate Material Design in it.

Before proceeding to the instructions, you will need to fulfill few requirements:

  • You must be running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), Android 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 (Jelly Bean) or Android 4.4 (Kitkat) to install this Google Keyboard.
  • You must uninstall the previously installed Google Keyboard in-order to install this one otherwise, you won’t be able to get the material UI.


  • First of all, download the Google Keyboard apk from this link to your phone or download it in your PC and transfer it to your phone.
  • Once downloaded, open the app’s apk file by tapping it from where you downloaded or transferred it.

Note: You will have to enable the installation of apps from outside the Play Store by following the instructions in this article.

  • You would be asked for the app to install. Press ‘Install’.
  • Now, the app will start installing. Once installed, press ‘Open‘.


  • You would be showed the tutorial to enable Google Keyboard. Go through the instructions and enable it and make it the default keyboard.


  • Once the tutorial has ended, you would be able to use the Google Keyboard.

How to get the Material design similar to Android L?

You might be wondering where is the all new material design from Android L. Don’t worry, its there and you just have to enable it.

  • Open up ‘Settings’ and navigate to ‘Language & input’. Here look for ‘Google Keyboard’ and press the Settings icon against it.


  • Google Keyboard Settings’ will open. Here scroll to the end of the settings and press ‘Advanced Settings’.
  • In ‘Advanced Settings’ look for ‘Color scheme’ option and press it. Here select ‘Material’.


  • You’re done here! Once you open Google Keyboard, you will get the all new Material design from Android L.
